Jeju Oreum Recommendation Gunsan Oreum Precautions Essential.

🌋 A Hidden Gem in Jeju: Hiking Gunsan Oreum

An easy climb with stunning panoramic views—just watch the drive up!

If you’re planning a trip to Jeju Island and want to experience one of its many oreum (volcanic cones) without committing to a long or challenging hike, Gunsan Oreum might be the perfect spot for you. Located in the Andeok-myeon area of Seogwipo, Gunsan Oreum offers not only a short, beginner-friendly trail, but also some of the best 360-degree views on the island.

But don’t let the word “easy” fool you—there are a few things you’ll definitely want to know before you go.

🚗 Getting There: A Steep and Narrow Drive

One of the biggest challenges of Gunsan Oreum isn’t the hike itself, but the road that leads up to the parking lot. The path is steep, narrow, and only wide enough for one car in many sections. If you happen to encounter another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, maneuvering to let them pass can be tricky, especially because of the slope.

Important tip: As you’re driving up or down, keep an eye out for wider pull-off spots where you can safely let others pass. And if you’re a beginner driver, it might be best to visit with someone more confident behind the wheel.

🥾 The Hike: Short and Sweet

Once you reach the parking area, the hike to the summit is surprisingly short—it takes only about 5 minutes on foot. You’ll start at a simple staircase that winds up the slope, and once you’re past a brief incline, you’re almost at the top.

The trail is not technically difficult, but do be careful if it has rained recently—some parts can get a bit slippery.

🌄 The Views: Absolutely Worth It

What makes Gunsan Oreum so special is the breathtaking view you get from such a short climb. At the summit, you’re greeted with a panoramic vista that includes:

  • Sanbangsan Mountain rising majestically in the distance
  • The vast Seogwipo coastline
  • The peaceful mid-mountain countryside villages of Jeju
  • And on clear days, a spectacular view of Hallasan, the island’s iconic volcanic peak

There’s also a photo spot just below the summit where you can snap a perfect picture with Hallasan in the background.

📸 History and Hidden Corners

Interestingly, Gunsan Oreum was once used as a strategic military lookout during the Japanese occupation, and traces of those facilities still remain. This only adds to the mystique of the place and emphasizes how prime this spot is when it comes to visibility and open sightlines.

🧭 Final Tips Before You Go

  • ⏱️ Time Required: Around 5 minutes to drive up + 5 minutes to hike
  • 🚻 Facilities: A basic portable toilet is available at the parking lot
  • 📷 Photo Tip: The best view is just below the summit—perfect for landscape shots with Hallasan
  • 🚘 Driving Warning: Not recommended for beginner drivers due to narrow, steep roads
  • 🌤️ Weather: The summit can be windy and weather changes are frequent—check conditions beforehand

If you’re staying in southern Jeju or around Seogwipo, consider heading to Gunsan Oreum early in the morning. The light is beautiful at that time, and the air feels especially crisp.

❤️ Why I Keep Coming Back

Personally, Gunsan Oreum has become one of those places I revisit every time I’m in Jeju. It’s peaceful, it’s scenic, and best of all—it’s easily accessible without spending half a day hiking. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or just someone looking for a peaceful escape with a killer view, Gunsan Oreum won’t disappoint.
