Seonnyeo Rock Beach – A Small Yet Charming Seaside Escape in Eulwangri, Yeongjongdo Incheon
Incheon’s Yeongjongdo Island is home to several beaches, each with its own character. Among them, three stand out as the most well-known: Eulwangri Beach, Wangsan Beach, and Seonnyeo Rock Beach. While Eulwangri and Wangsan are larger and more developed, Seonnyeo Rock Beach remains small and cozy, almost more of a seaside spot than a full-scale beach.
A Modest and Relaxing Beach
Unlike its bigger neighbors, Seonnyeo Rock Beach stretches only about 300 meters from end to end, making it an intimate destination for those who prefer less crowded places. Its name, Seonnyeo (meaning “fairy maiden”), comes from the large rock formation that resembles a figure said to have descended from the heavens—a piece of local folklore that adds charm to the beach.
The shallow waters and gentle waves make it a good place for families with children, and in the evenings you’ll often see people digging for clams and enjoying a bit of seaside foraging (haerujil).
Facilities and Parking
Seonnyeo Rock Beach doesn’t have the same level of infrastructure as larger beaches. Parking is available in a temporary lot, which is free but not very spacious. There’s also a public restroom opposite the parking area. One downside is the lack of pedestrian crosswalks between the lot and the beach—something visitors often hope the local government will improve.
Despite these limitations, the atmosphere feels authentic, almost like a throwback to a quieter era before Yeongjongdo became so developed.
Natural Shade and Convenience
On the right-hand side of the beach, you’ll find pine trees that provide natural shade, a welcome retreat during the hot summer months. Around the parking lot, there are a few convenience stores (Emart24 and GS25) and small cafés or restaurants. While not as abundant as in Eulwangri, they’re enough for a quick snack or drink after a swim.
Then and Now
Just a decade or two ago, Seonnyeo Rock Beach was surrounded by little more than a few pensions, with no major shops or restaurants. Over time, new buildings, eateries, and guesthouses have popped up, bringing more visitors. Still, compared to the bustling crowds at Eulwangri and Wangsan Beaches, Seonnyeo Rock Beach often feels like a quieter alternative—except on weekends, when it can get just as packed.
Nearby Spots to Explore
- Eulwangri Beach & Wangsan Beach – Both are just 5–10 minutes north by car, larger in scale and popular for water sports.
- Mashian Beach – About 5 minutes south, home to the famous Mashian Bakery, known for its “yeontan bread” (charcoal briquette bread) and seaside café with access to the tidal flats.
- Inspire Entertainment Resort – A short drive away, perfect if you want to combine a beach trip with shopping or entertainment.
Why Visit Seonnyeo Rock Beach
If you’re looking for a place that feels a little more intimate and laid-back, Seonnyeo Rock Beach is ideal. It’s a spot where kids can safely play in shallow waters, couples can take quiet walks by the sea, and photographers can capture both the rock formation and the gentle evening waves.
Though it may lack the flashy facilities of bigger beaches, it has a humble charm that makes it worth visiting—especially if you’re already exploring Yeongjongdo’s coast.
