🌉 A Night Walk at Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge in Gimcheon – A Hidden Gem with Stunning Views
On a recent visit to my hometown, I found myself planning a short local trip for my mom and my younger sibling’s family, who had flown in from overseas for the holidays. I was looking for something nearby yet special — something peaceful, photogenic, and memorable.
And then it hit me: the night view at Buhang Dam’s suspension bridge in Gimcheon.
🌌 A Serene Spot Most People Don’t Know About
Located in Buhang-myeon, Gimcheon, this scenic suspension bridge offers one of the most underrated night views in the region. It’s actually my fourth time visiting — and each time, I’ve been surprised by how few people are there.
Maybe it’s because not many know about it, or perhaps it’s the rural setting, but that’s part of the charm. Quiet, calm, and beautifully lit, the bridge feels like a well-kept secret waiting to be discovered.
🏞️ About the Buhang Dam Area
The Buhang Dam was built to block and manage the river flowing through Buhang-myeon. The water flows downstream through Jirye-myeon, later merging with the Gamcheon River before joining the Nakdong River. It provides vital drinking and agricultural water to the local communities.
📌 Fun side note: Nearby Jirye-myeon is nationally known for black pork (흑돼지) — so if you’re planning a trip here, consider adding a delicious pork BBQ stop to your itinerary!
🚗 Getting There & Parking Tips
There are two main parking lots: one near the start of the trail and one higher up, closer to the zipline and observatory, which operate during the daytime. If you plan to enjoy those activities, the upper parking lot is more convenient. Otherwise, either lot works fine, and both connect to the bridge area.
Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are available at both parking lots, which is a nice touch.
🌈 The Suspension Bridge at Night
This isn’t just any bridge — it’s a gently swaying pedestrian suspension bridge with color-changing LED lights that create a mesmerizing scene after sunset. While it technically moves, the swaying is subtle, making it safe and comfortable for visitors of all ages.
And here’s the best part: no admission fee, even at night.
If you’re the kind of traveler who looks for hidden night spots in Korea — something outside the typical Seoul skyline — this is exactly the kind of place that will steal your heart.
The bridge lighting stays on until 10 PM during the warmer months, so be sure to time your visit.
📸 Photography & Safety Tips
- There’s a charming pavilion halfway across the bridge that’s perfect for photos.
- While the bridge is secure and has railings, do hold young children’s hands — just in case.
- The view from either end of the bridge is gorgeous, and you can even spot the rainbow-colored bridge in the distance.
Even though the observatory is closed at night, the view from the bridge itself more than makes up for it.
🏕️ Nearby Attractions & Extra Tips
✅ The Sannaedeul Auto Camping Site is nearby — great for campers looking to add a night walk to their itinerary.
✅ From downtown Gimcheon, it’s about a 20-minute drive.
✅ The location also sits near the border of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do (Geochang County), and Jeollabuk-do (Muju County) — so even travelers from those areas can reach it in about an hour.
💬 Final Thoughts
Visiting Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge at night was a quiet, magical experience. The lights, the breeze, the silence — all of it created a kind of peaceful wonder.
