Cheonpo Hoegwan – A Samgyeopsal Heaven with Fresh Minari in Uijeongbu
If you’re the type of person who can’t go a week without grilled pork belly, Cheonpo Hoegwan near Uijeongbu Station is exactly where you need to be. This was my second visit, and just walking toward the entrance brought back that sense of excitement. On a rainy late-summer day, when the monsoon was winding down, nothing felt more perfect than sizzling samgyeopsal paired with a shot of soju.
Famous for Minari Samgyeopsal
Cheonpo Hoegwan has built a strong reputation as a minari samgyeopsal restaurant, and for good reason. Here, fresh crown daisy greens (minari) are served in generous portions, meant to be grilled right alongside thick slices of pork belly. The combination creates a fragrant, earthy flavor that balances the richness of the meat beautifully.
Just a short 5-minute walk from Uijeongbu Station (or 2 minutes from the light rail station), the restaurant is easy to reach. Step inside, and you’ll find a spacious dining hall with tables for small groups and even extra-large sections for parties. The bright and clean interior is an added plus.
Unlimited Side Dishes and Surprising Extras
One of the biggest highlights here is the bottomless side dishes. Domestic kimchi and fresh minari are served without limit, and you can even grill your own minari kimchi pancakes as much as your appetite allows. Even better, yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) is provided as a complimentary service with your meal, something you don’t expect at most barbecue places.
The side menu is equally tempting, featuring yukhoe, yukjeon (beef pancakes), snowy makguksu, five-color bibim guksu, kimchi cheese fried rice, and minari doenjang jjigae. For lunchtime specials, meals include traditional cauldron-cooked rice, making it feel even more hearty.
The Experience of Grilling
At the table, a large stone grill is filled with pork belly, kimchi, shredded green onions, and of course, piles of minari. The sound and aroma alone are enough to make you impatient. Once the thick slices of pork belly are seared on both sides, they’re cut into bite-sized pieces and grilled to perfection.
Each bite wrapped with fresh greens and just-cooked minari was a perfect harmony of textures and flavors. The doenjang jjigae with minari added a deep, savory richness that paired wonderfully with rice. And of course, finishing the meal with a bowl of bibim guksu tossed with leftover vegetables was the perfect ending.
