Jeonju’s famous restaurant for sundae soup in the southern market, Cho Jeomnyo’s Nammoon Pisoondae

“I briefly introduce a place where I had a late lunch on my business trip to Jeonju.

Having been busy exploring various places since morning, I ended up having lunch much later than usual. Originally, I was supposed to have lunch with the business owner, but due to missed timings at every destination and my workaholic tendencies, I ended up going to eat well past 3 PM.

In the search for a place convenient for solo dining, I ended up at a renowned sundae soup specialty restaurant in Jeonju’s Nammoon Market, known as Cho Jeomnyo’s Nammoon Pisoondae.

But why is it named Nammoon Market when it’s in the South? The main gate is Pungnam Gate, isn’t it? Is it all just like that?

As I parked and entered, a street with a strong traditional market vibe continued. It felt somewhat similar to Jongno or Dongdaemun Gwangjang Market.

However, these days, even on weekdays, Gwangjang Market is bustling with people.

Regardless, I parked at the public parking lot and made my way into the market. (Note: There are only two public parking lots; the rest are private.)

I plan to prepare a separate post about parking at Nammoon Market in the future.

Since it was a weekday, I hesitated whether it might be a holiday and visited with mixed feelings, but fortunately, it wasn’t a holiday. Generally, such famous large restaurants, except during holidays, rarely have closed days.

I thought of Nammoon Sundae Guk when I heard Nammoon, thinking it was the Nammoon Market Sundae Guk, but it turns out it’s Nammoon Pisoondae in Nammoon Market.

I was aware that it was a famous place, but I’ll make a note to visit again when I come to Jeonju next time.

But memories of my trip to Iksan were even better than those of Jeonju.

✅ Business Hours 6 AM – 10 PM

The entrance of Cho Jeomnyo's Nammoon Pisoondae in Jeonju.

It seems like a place where you could come for a hearty hangover soup even in the morning. When it comes to hangover soup, the first place that comes to mind is a morning rice soup restaurant I tried in Yeongju. (Refer to my blog post)

It has appeared on various media outlets such as SaengSaeng Information and Delicious Guys. It is renowned for its traditional sundae soup at Jeonju Nammoon Market.

However, unfortunately, I personally found it hard to give a high score.

Perhaps, it didn’t quite suit my taste or expectations for sundae soup.

✅ Menu

  • Sundae Gukbap: 9,000 KRW
  • Special Gukbap: 10,000 KRW

For those who don’t often have sundae soup, I would recommend Sundae Gukbap instead of the Special Gukbap.

As it is famous, it seems to have been frequently featured in various media outlets.

✅ Self-Service Corner From the front dish to dipping sauce, shrimp sauce, kimchi, pickled radish, peppers, garlic, etc., you can comfortably add and taste various side dishes.

Basic side dishes, including garlic chives, were set up, and the main Special Gukbap was quickly served not long after.

The speed at which the food comes out is as swift and accurate as anywhere in Korea.

The first taste was honestly a bit greasy. Well… it wasn’t the taste I expected.

Disappointing.

After diligently going around all day without having lunch, now that I finally had a meal…

Although the portion was generous and satisfying, the taste of the broth was not what I had imagined or expected.

I should have just ordered regular sundae soup…

I regret ordering the Special Gukbap.

(There is a sudden feeling of disappointment.)

A large piece of Pisoondae and an immense amount of pork offal, including various kinds such as intestines and makchang, filled the big pot.

A large traditional Pisoondae is also included, not to mention three pieces.

Makchang is also sporadically visible.

Pork makchang is a bit expensive, but it was generously served.

A pile of meat

To be honest, it seems like I left about half.

Even though the size seemed like it would be enough to eat one, various vegetables, sundae, and pig intestines were put into a big pot and cooked thoroughly.

After removing all the pork offal, try wrapping the remaining broth with rice.

These days, I don’t eat carbohydrates much…

I usually eat the toppings first before wrapping rice in these kinds of soups, but I have developed a habit of reducing carbohydrates, so I only wrap about 1/3 or half of the rice.

Adding chives late made it somewhat better.

It felt like the long-lost traditional sundae was not quite familiar to me.

An interesting taste.

Fold/Unfold

Jeonju Nammoon Market, located inside Pungnam Moon Market, is a place where you can taste traditional sundae soup.

It's highly recommended to include green onions in sundae soup

[My Honest Review]

✔ People have different tastes and differences in how they perceive flavors. However, the sundae soup with pisoondae, osori gamtu (pig’s ear), and makchang in the Special Gukbap was somewhat disappointing for me. How should I describe it? It had a slightly greasy taste. Anyway, as a place renowned for sundae soup at Jeonju Nammoon Market, opinions may vary depending on individual preferences.

✔ If you want to taste traditional sundae soup, I recommend ordering Sundae Gukbap instead of the Special Gukbap. The Special Gukbap contains less common pork offal, so keep that in mind.
