Gyeongpo Lake is a freshwater lake located in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is one of the largest lakes in the Gangneung area. The lake is surrounded by beautiful scenery and walking trails, making it a popular destination for tourists. There are various recreational and leisure facilities around the lake, making it suitable for family outings or vacations.
Gyeongpo Beach, adjacent to Gyeongpo Lake, is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Gangneung. Known for its fine and soft white sand, the beach attracts many visitors for swimming during the summer. In addition to swimming, visitors can enjoy cafes and restaurants lining the beach for relaxation or take a stroll along the coast.
Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpo Beach, facing each other, showcase the natural beauty of Gangneung and have become iconic tourist attractions in the region. The two locations offer a picturesque blend of lake and sea, providing visitors with a particularly enchanting experience.
When coming to Gangneung, I found a frequently visited accommodation spot – Mare Hotel, located along the road where Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpo Beach face each other. The view from the hotel encompasses Gyeongpo Lake and the ocean at Gyeongpo Beach, allowing guests to choose between rooms with lake or ocean views.
I personally opted for the lake view, considering the night scenery, as I often experience ocean views. The choice seems justified, although it’s worth noting that ocean-view rooms come with a higher price tag. Behind the hotel unfolds Gyeongpo Lake, making it a preferable choice for those seeking cost-effective accommodation.
Gangneung Hotel Mare, as seen from the front, is right in front of Gyeongpo Beach. Along the coast road of Gyeongpo Daehaesuyokjang (Gyeongpo Beach), various hotels of different sizes can be found.
The Mare Hotel is located at 443 Changhaero, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do (Gangmun-dong). With Gyeongpo Lake behind and Gyeongpo Beach in front, the location is ideal. For reservations, it is recommended to use accommodation apps such as Yanolja, Yeohatda, or Airbnb.
It’s advisable to make reservations in advance for better cost-effectiveness, especially considering that on weekends, prices tend to be higher, and availability may be limited due to popularity.
A notable feature of this ocean-view hotel in Gangneung is its proximity, just 10 seconds away from the stunning view of Gyeongpo Daehaesuyokjang (Gyeongpo Beach). This is perhaps its most significant advantage, offering a fantastic deck path along the beach.
For those without a car, there is a service to transport guests to the tunnel and train station, though it may not be entirely free.
The entrance view of Gyeongpo Lake was seen when entering the hotel. This picturesque scene was a major factor in choosing this place.
Fortunately, I was assigned a room on the 4th floor. Although the highest floor is the 5th, the view of Gyeongpo Lake from the 4th floor was enjoyable. If I were to return, I would likely choose a lake view again.
The hotel room was not overly spacious but not cramped either, more like a standard room than a deluxe one. It is adequate for two people.
The bathroom in Gangneung Mare Hotel was clean and met my personal standards, especially considering factors such as odor and cleanliness. The indirect lighting behind the mirror scored high in terms of interior design.
A small table with only one chair was provided in the room. While sufficient for solo business trips, it might be somewhat insufficient for couples or those expecting more seating options.
The hotel’s bedding was notably clean and comfortable, with four pillows provided as a standard. The presence of a terrace offered a view of Gyeongpo Lake.
The hotel provided HaruHaru Americano coffee, a pleasant surprise for someone who dislikes instant coffee. The basic amenities in the room were comprehensive, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, foam cleanser, skin care products, and a razor.
While the room did not have a sea view, the lake view from the terrace and the hotel entrance justified the choice. The nighttime lake view was particularly attractive.
Overall, the Mare Hotel in Gangneung may not be a 4 or 5-star establishment, but it offers a clean and comfortable environment. Its geographical location, facing both Gyeongpo Lake and the ocean, adds to its appeal.
[Personal Experience]
✔ On the downside, accommodation prices in Gangneung tend to be relatively high on weekends. (Using accommodation apps on weekdays provides better value for money.)
On the positive side, being a newly built facility, the bedding and indoor areas are clean and pleasant.
✔ Guests can choose between an ocean view of Gyeongpo Daehaesuyokjang and a lake view. (Despite ocean views being pricier, I personally recommend the lake view.)
✔ It takes only 10 seconds to reach the sea, and there’s a 1-minute walk to the Gyeongpo Lake promenade.
The hotel is not large-scale, but it provides essential amenities and maintains a comfortable condition inside. The presence of a small terrace was appreciated.
Nearby, there are convenience stores and pubs, making the hotel convenient in terms of facilities.

[Personal Comment]
✔ The hotel is not as spacious as a 4 or 5-star hotel but is neither cramped. It is more like a standard room, suitable for two people.
I always carry my personal toiletries, but having these items available is a nice touch for those who might need them.
✔ The view from the terrace and entrance of the hotel is beautiful. I made the reservation for this experience.
✔ Unfortunately, I couldn’t take a leisurely walk around Gyeongpo Lake due to time constraints.
If time allows, I recommend taking a walk around the lake as the surrounding mountains in the East Sea region offer breathtaking scenery.
✔ The service that transfers guests to the tunnel and train station is available, but it may not be entirely free.
✔ The presence of a tool to remove sand from shoes at the hotel entrance demonstrates consideration for guest comfort and internal cleanliness.
