Bongseonsa Temple Lotus Festival – A Hidden Gem for a Pocheon Day Trip
When you think of a summer getaway near Seoul, Bongseonsa Temple in Namyangju often comes to mind. Officially, it belongs to Namyangju, but locals and travelers alike associate it strongly with Pocheon, making it a perfect stop on a Pocheon day trip itinerary.
The Lotus Festival at Bongseonsa Temple
Every July, Bongseonsa Temple hosts a lotus flower festival, where vast lotus ponds come alive in shades of pink, white, and soft purple. Even in early July, before the peak bloom, the ponds are already filled with buds and blossoms, creating a peaceful, photo-worthy landscape. Walking along the small forest paths, you’ll not only enjoy the sight of lotus flowers but also the fragrance of wildflowers that bloom throughout the temple grounds.
Parking and Access
Parking at Bongseonsa Temple has recently become paid. If you’re not a temple member, the easiest way is to get a parking stamp from the Bongseonsa Café, which offers about 90 minutes of free parking. Otherwise, you can stay longer by paying a small additional fee. Keep in mind, though, that drinks at the café are a bit pricey (around 5,000 KRW for an iced Americano).
One convenient feature is that you don’t have to go through the temple’s main gate to enjoy the lotus ponds—there’s a side entrance leading directly into the lotus festival area.
Nearby Attractions – A Perfect Day Trip Route
What makes Bongseonsa Temple a great travel spot is its connection to nearby attractions:
- Gwangneung Arboretum (reservation required): Just a short drive or a 30-minute walk through the forest path from the temple entrance.
- Gwangneung Royal Tombs: About 5 minutes by car, or easily walkable from the temple. Entry costs only 1,000 KRW.
- Gomo Reservoir (Gomori Lake): About 15 minutes away by car, this scenic reservoir is lined with cafés and restaurants, plus a walking trail around the lake. Perfect for winding down after the temple visit.
This combination makes it easy to design a one-day itinerary around Bongseonsa Temple, mixing cultural, natural, and foodie experiences.
Café Views and Relaxing Spots
Around the temple grounds, you’ll find cafés and small shops selling Buddhist goods. Some of the best views of the lotus ponds can be enjoyed from the cafés—whether it’s the official temple café near the entrance or a more hidden café tucked under the mountainside.
On a warm summer day, many visitors take a break at the outdoor parasol tables overlooking the lotus ponds. The second-floor seating offers even more panoramic views, perfect for soaking in the beauty with a cool drink.
Family-Friendly Experiences
The lotus festival is also a fun spot for children. From spotting dragonflies above the lotus leaves to walking along flower-lined trails, kids can enjoy nature up close. With its mix of temple serenity, flower-filled landscapes, and nearby attractions, Bongseonsa is a place that appeals to all ages.
