Lately, I’ve had the opportunity to visit Donghae City and Samcheok City twice.
It’s a place I’ve come to when visiting Samcheok Port (Jeongrjin Port) without fail.
And Shinhwa Hoejib, where you can find a simple yet somewhat special mulhoe (raw fish soup), is my regular spot.
Samcheok Port gives off a feeling of being less developed compared to other ports in Gangwon Province, but it’s not in a negative sense; it has a retro charm.
From a distance, you can see the newly built earthquake and tsunami safety tower at Jeongrjin Port, which has now become a landmark of Samcheok Port.
After enjoying a refreshing bowl of mulhoe at a Samcheok Port restaurant, it would be nice to take a stroll around to aid digestion.
Entrance is free.
Another aspect of Samcheok Port: houses on the hills and hills overlooking Jeongrjin Port (another name for Samcheok Port).
Recently, cafes seem to be popping up one by one. Perhaps one day it will become a landmark like Busan’s Dalmaji Hill.
Returning to Shinhwa Hoejib in Samcheok after three months, strangely it specializes only in mulhoe.
Shinhwa Hoejib is located at 65-1 Saechunyeondo-ro, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, and for parking, it’s best to use the public parking lot along the harbor or park at the intersection before entering the entrance.
Business hours: 10 am to 3 pm (last order at 2:30 pm), notably, they don’t operate in the evening.
They specialize in only three menu items: mulhoe, grilled rockfish soup, and raw fish over rice.
Squid and hairtail are the main ingredients, although the specific name for the pinkish fish eludes me.
On hot summer days like today, the sight of patbingsu, a shaved ice dessert, promises to cool you down, complementing the refreshing atmosphere unique to Samcheok Port.
Although it doesn’t boast extravagant ingredients like abalone and sea urchin roe, the mulhoe at Shinhwa Hoejib has its own unique style.
It’s suitable for those with weaker digestive systems or even children.
After finishing the mulhoe, you can request a bowl of rice to soak up the remaining broth, which further satisfies your stomach.
Shinhwa Mulhoe, located near Samcheok Port, is already well-known among locals.
[Personal Review]
They don’t operate in the evening. (Note)
Last order at 2:30 pm.
(Refer to the business hours provided above)
Special mulhoe is recommended over regular mulhoe.
You can also request a mix of squid and other fresh fish.
After filling up at this delightful mulhoe restaurant, taking a walk to the Samcheok Port earthquake and tsunami safety tower will aid digestion and offer a chance to enjoy the old charm and stunning views of Jeongrjin Port.
