Renewal of Driver’s License Aptitude Test and Issuance of Mobile Driver’s License
This year, I had been postponing the renewal of my driver’s license aptitude test, but I finally got it done.
While renewing my aptitude test, I also applied for a mobile driver’s license at the same time.
The process was simpler than I thought. If you have a record of a national health check-up, the health certification is automatically registered.
All you need to do is prepare a photo online, upload it, submit your application, register, make the payment, and finally pick up your mobile driver’s license.
Tip: Even if you apply for a mobile driver’s license, you still receive a physical license. You can store the mobile license on your phone and use it as an alternative in case you forget to bring the physical one, such as at the airport or when an ID is required.
Here’s an extra tip! Opting for an English version on the back of your license can be helpful when traveling abroad and needing a driver’s license.
I completed the entire application process online and visited the Dobong Driver’s License Testing Center to pick up my license. It took about a month from application to issuance.
For those who need a physical health check-up, the testing center also has a dedicated medical examination room in the basement. Additionally, there’s a photo studio available for taking license photos.
Things to Note:
- You can renew your driver’s license aptitude test either by visiting the license testing center in person or by applying online. Personally, I recommend doing it online for convenience.
- The renewal and mobile driver’s license application can be done on the Korea Road Traffic Authority website.
The renewal fee, including the aptitude test, costs KRW 26,000 for a physical license and KRW 36,000 for a mobile license (including the English version on the back).
I recommend the mobile IC driver’s license because it holds the same legal validity as the physical license in places like banks, airports, and government offices.
If you’re in a hurry, you can visit a driver’s license testing center and get a mobile license issued on the same day.
Important: When applying online, ensure the photo you submit is recent and different from the one on your current driver’s license. The mobile license also involves a face recognition step during issuance, so your photo should closely resemble your current appearance.
For international driving permits, you’ll need a passport, your driver’s license, one passport-sized photo, and a fee of KRW 9,000. However, if your mobile IC driver’s license includes an English version, it may serve as an international driving permit in certain countries.

- Visit the Korea Road Traffic Authority website to apply for the renewal of your driver’s license aptitude test online. If you have a record of a national health check-up, it will automatically be included.
- Upload a scanned photo during the application process.
- After about a month, visit the driver’s license testing center to pick up your mobile driver’s license.
If you’re in a rush, you can visit the testing center and complete the process on the same day. Avoid peak times, such as the end of the year, to ensure a smoother experience.
