The origin of the Sokcho ferry in Gangwon Province dates back to a time when it served as a vital transportation link connecting Sokcho’s Central Dong and Cheongho Dong. Before the construction of bridges, the ferry played a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people and goods across the waterway. Over the years, as modern infrastructure developed, the ferry transitioned from a functional necessity to a popular attraction, especially among tourists. Today, the Sokcho ferry remains a cultural symbol, embodying the historical significance of transportation in the region and offering visitors a unique experience that reflects the area’s rich maritime heritage

After a visit to Sokcho Central Market, I headed towards the nearby ferry pier.

The ferry used to connect Sokcho Central Dong and Cheongho Dong before the bridge was built, serving as a transportation means. Now, it has become a popular attraction for tourists.

The scenery at the Sokcho Ferry Pier in Gangwon Province is a picturesque blend of coastal charm and maritime activity. With the backdrop of the East Sea, the pier provides a tranquil view of the clear waters and, in the distance, the connecting bridges that have replaced the ferry's original role. The pier itself is a hub of activity, with ferry boats docking and departing, offering a unique perspective on the historical significance of this transportation link. Surrounding the area, you can find cozy pubs and cafes, creating a delightful atmosphere for visitors to enjoy the coastal ambiance.

Sokcho Ferry St. Youth Mall

It was near the pier, but there were few people around. Despite the flashy building, it didn’t seem to capture the attention of tourists.

On the contrary, there was a pub right in front of the pier, offering a stylish space with performances and an ocean view where you could enjoy a drink.

Sokcho City Center and Abai Village Cheongho Dong are also connected by this means of transportation. Although it’s now easy to cross by car with the bridge, in the past, it was challenging to get across without the ferry.

Evening ferry services seem to operate, possibly until 10 PM.

The ferry operates at different times depending on the season:

May to October: 5 AM to 11 PM

November to April: 5:30 AM to 10:30 PM

Sokcho Ferry

When Sokcho Port was established, a waterway was created between Sokcho In Port and Sokcho Out Port. To cross this waterway, a ferry was built.

Ferry Usage Fees: 500 KRW each way (Separate payment for each one-way trip, no round-trip fee)

The ferry pier parking lot is quite small. Although there is a parking lot for Sokcho Ferries, it can accommodate only a small number of vehicles. Therefore, it is recommended to use the nearby public parking lot.

About a 10-minute walk from the ferry pier towards the Sunlight Hotel direction, there is a public parking lot.

Alternatively, on the opposite side of the ferry pier in Cheongho Dong, there is also a public parking lot.

If you plan to experience the ferry, parking in Cheongho Dong on the opposite side and then crossing would be convenient.

Finally, parking at Sokcho Central Market Tourist Market Parking is not recommended, as it is the farthest away.

This is where the course begins, crossing to Cheongho Dong on the opposite side and passing through Cheongho Beach to return.

It was a weekend, but the weather was somewhat cloudy, and there weren’t many guests. Perhaps because it was April, the sudden drop in temperature to below 10 degrees made it feel like there weren’t many tourists in Sokcho, Gangwon Province.

True to the East Sea, the sea right in front of the pier was so clear that you could see the bottom as if it were shallow. However, quite a few small fish were visible.

Thinking that only these were all, it was a big mistake. There were significantly larger junior fish that were completely black.

Many people may not have noticed, but fortunately, I could see many naturally occurring fish in the water.

When boarding the ferry, it takes less than 5 minutes to arrive on the opposite side. Moreover, as it moves manually through a ring hook, if you help by hooking the ring, the boatman may greatly appreciate it.

It connects Sokcho Fish Grilling Alley to Abai Village. The pier is within a 5-minute walk from Sokcho Central Market.

Also, on the opposite side in Cheongho Dong, there is Cheongho Beach, also known as Cheongho Seashore and a small beach called Ganui Beach, which is quieter and clearer than expected.

✔ The Sokcho ferry operates for a long time, from 5 AM to 11 PM during the peak summer season.

✔ Since there is no separate large parking lot for Sokcho Ferries, it is recommended to use nearby public parking lots.

(The P2 public parking lot, which is about a 10-minute walk away, is the most convenient.)

It’s located as you walk towards Sunlight Hotel.

✔ You can take a ferry from Sokcho Central Dong Ferry Pier to the opposite Cheongho Dong Abai Village, and in Abai Village, there is a themed village with various street foods and cafes, and a small Cheongho Beach where you can enjoy the atmosphere of a sandy beach.

** Travel tip

The origin of Abai Village in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, can be traced back to its establishment as a unique themed village. Once connected by the Sokcho ferry, this area served as a crucial connection between Sokcho’s Central Dong and Cheongho Dong. Over time, the introduction of a bridge for easier vehicular passage diminished the role of the ferry, leading to the transformation of Abai Village into a charming tourist destination. With its diverse street food offerings, cafes, and the presence of Cheongho Beach, Abai Village has become a thematic village where visitors can experience a blend of culinary delights and coastal ambiance
