The Jolgol Sundubu restaurant in Pocheon had great value for its sundubu & cheonggukjang & and kimchi hot pot.

Pocheon Jeolgolsundubu

A Restaurant Famous for Sundubu, Cheonggukjang, and Kimchi Hot Pot

Jeolgolsundubu in Pocheon is a hidden gem near Gomori, offering not only delicious food but also great value for money.

How did I find this place? I’d say thanks to the power of Naver Maps. It was truly a stroke of luck.

I had been planning to visit, and I finally made it here. I think this place will be added to my list of go-to restaurants.

The parking lot is spacious. However, it’s a dirt lot, so be cautious as dust might be an issue. Still, the ample and convenient parking is a definite plus.

Location of Jeolgolsundubu in Pocheon

The road to get here is somewhat narrow and challenging, being a single-lane path that’s a bit secluded.

There’s ongoing construction along the way, the roads are narrow, and there are occasional dirt paths, so drive carefully. It’s hard to get here using public transportation.

Operating Hours

Open from 10 AM to 3 PM, closed on Mondays (Note the short operating hours).

They don’t seem to serve dinner. This is common in many places in Jeju-do. In fact, this is quite nice and relaxing. It’s even better if you’re running a business without being greedy for money.

Inside the Restaurant

Most of the seating is on the floor, although there are some tables with chairs. Since the majority of seating is on the floor, keep this in mind. Personally, I find floor seating uncomfortable.

Menu with Great Value

As the name suggests, tofu dishes are the main offerings. Sundubu, Modeubu, Dubu Muchim, Kimchi Hot Pot, and Cheonggukjang are on the menu.

All ingredients like beans, chili powder, pork, kimchi, and rice are locally sourced.

Especially, the Kimchi Hot Pot for two people is priced at 16,000 won, offering great value. The other menu items are also reasonably priced, which I appreciated. I was worried the portions might be small, but that wasn’t the case.

We ordered Cheonggukjang and Sundubu, and before the Cheonggukjang arrived, the side dishes were served.

There were a total of nine side dishes including seaweed. Great value, and the taste was good too. This place is definitely worth revisiting.

There’s a reason for the many side dishes, which I’ll explain below.

Sundubu with Sauce

You can scoop some sundubu and add the sauce, or put some rice on seaweed and add a bit of sundubu on top. It was good either way.

I didn’t expect it, but they served a special dish with a fried egg, sesame, and sesame oil in a bowl. Wow, they intended for us to mix the rice in here and eat it.

An unexpected treat in Pocheon Gomori, where else can you find such a value-for-money sundubu cheonggukjang?

The rice was black rice. Although white rice might suit better here, considering the price, the black rice was a pleasant surprise.

The clear sundubu, being made from local beans, felt even more worthwhile. Considering the side dishes, it felt like a great deal.

Instinctive Preparation

The fact that they knew to mix the rice without being told was quite impressive.

Initially, I thought we might need a refill on the side dishes, so I asked if that was possible. The owner assured me it wouldn’t be necessary, and they were right.

Cheonggukjang

The cheonggukjang was rich and flavorful. It tasted more rustic and hearty compared to typical versions.

In my opinion, it deserved a score of over 90 points.

Sundubu should be eaten with the accompanying sauce. Rather than calling it sauce, seasoned soy sauce fits better. It was good with rice on seaweed too.

Review of Jeolgolsundubu in Pocheon

[My Personal Review]

Cheonggukjang with a spoonful of bibimbap was a perfect match, and true to a tofu specialty restaurant, there were large chunks of tofu in the cheonggukjang as well.

✔️ The path to get here is narrow, but it’s a hidden gem for value-for-money cheonggukjang, sundubu, and modeubu in Pocheon.

✔️ They close at 3 PM. I think it’s best to arrive by 2 PM. It would be disappointing to travel far and miss the last order.

✔️ Kimchi Hot Pot seems to be a main menu item here, with many people ordering it. I’ll have to try it on my next visit.
